Appearances in the Luigi's Mansion seriesEdit
In Luigi's Mansion, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Luigi's Mansion 3: The Room of DOOM!, Mario serves as an NPC rather than a playable character. In Luigi's Mansion 4: Haunted Dreams, Mario is playable after the player retrieves all 120 Power Stars and defeats the final boss for a second time. In Luigi's Mansion 5: Curse of the Mansion, Mario is playable when the player collects 50 Power Stars. Once the player does so, Mario will appear on the Ship of Mansions. He will tell Luigi that he will appear in numerous mansions and that if Luigi sees him, he would like to join in the adventure. If the player manages to complete the game for the first time, a letter will be delivered to Luigi, saying that Mario is now playable via swapping characters on the Ship of Mansions. In Luigi's Mansion 6: U Are Doomed!!, he is once again an NPC and an unlockable character. He is unlocked using the same way as in Haunted Dreams; by collecting 120 Power Stars and defeating the final boss again. Overall, gameplay with Mario is the same as in Haunted Dreams and Curse of the Mansion.
In Mario's playthrough of Haunted Dreams, Luigi will be absent for the rest of the game. This will cause the game to have two Marios. Note that the NPC Mario is slightly taller (though still not as tall as Luigi) than the playable Mario and that his clothes are lighter than the clothes of Mario and Luigi. The playable Mario will be referred to by the NPC Mario as "me", although in his letters, the NPC Mario will use the word "Brother", as if he wrote to Luigi.
